SIDELINE SCHOOL

Get low. Then get lower.

Most photos at a game are taken standing up. Kneel or sit low, and your kid becomes the hero.

How to shoot it
  1. Step 1

The camera should sit at their chest, or below

Standing, you look down on a child, and the background is other parents and the parking lot. Kneel, or take the front row, and the sky, the stands or the gym wall go behind them instead. Stay behind the line or in your seat, so a player running out of bounds has room to stop.

  2. Step 2

Fill the frame with your kid, then step closer

If you can read a sign behind them, you’re too far away. Move closer on your side of the line rather than cropping later, and leave a little space above the head.

  3. Step 3

    Hold still through the burst

Elbows in, phone in both hands, and burst as they plant. The one to keep is usually a few frames in, not the first.

Pro tip

Front row or one knee, a few steps back from the line.

They only grow up once.
