SIDELINE SCHOOL

Details: the frames you will cry about in ten years

Boots, muddy socks, laces, the ball on the spot, the scoreboard. Fill the frame with the thing.

How to shoot it
  1. Step 1

Get as close as the lens will let you

A detail shot is not “boots in a wide photo of the field.” It is the scuff on the left toe, the taped lace, the mud line halfway up the sock. Fill the rectangle. Get low even here — a boot photographed from standing height is just a shoe.

  2. Step 2

Shoot the ritual objects before the whistle, and after

Laces being tied in the parked car or on the bench. The ball on the centre spot before kickoff. The scoreboard when it still says 0–0, and again when it does not. Same objects, different weather, year after year: that’s the archive.
