Set the phone like a sideline photographer
Burst on, grid on, exposure locked, Full Quality uploads. Two minutes, once, then every game is easier.
- Step 1
Turn on burst, and turn Live Photos off
The play lasts a second. Burst (hold the shutter, or the volume button on iPhone) gives you 20 frames of that second. Live Photos and cinematic extras just slow the camera down when the ball is about to be struck.
- Step 2
Switch the grid on
Settings → Camera → Grid. The centre of the frame is where the kid and the ball should live. The grid also keeps horizons level when you are crouched on a lumpy touchline.
- Step 3
Lock exposure on the grass, not the sky
Tap the field, then hold until AE/AF Lock. Sideline sky and floodlights will otherwise pull the meter up and turn your kid into a silhouette. Re-lock when you change ends.
- Step 4
Upload Full Quality. Compressed photos are no use to a club
Portraits and headshots especially. Graphics need crop room and resolution. If ClutchSnap offers Full Quality, use it for anything you might want on a team sheet later.
Do this in the car before you leave. On the sideline you won’t remember.
