SIDELINE SCHOOL

Rituals: shoot the routine

The car ride, warm-ups, the team talk, oranges, the post-game snack. What changes most, year to year, is this.

How to shoot it
  1. Step 1

The car ride is the season, compressed

Kit on the back seat, a mouthguard in a cupholder, a sleepy face in the back. One frame on the way there, one on the way home. Take it parked, or hand the phone to whoever isn’t driving. You will know which season it was from the car alone.

  2. Step 2

Warm-ups, the huddle, oranges, snack: the same corners every week

Stand in the same place each Saturday so the years stack: the cones, the coach’s knees in the huddle, the orange slices on a hoodie. You are not covering a game here. You are covering a childhood.
