Set the phone like a pro photographer
Burst on, grid on, exposure locked, flash off. Two minutes, once, and every event is easier.
- Step 1
Turn on burst, and turn the flash off
A dive, a jump or a finish lasts a second. Burst (hold the shutter, or the volume button on iPhone) gives you a run of frames of it. Keep the flash off: it isn’t allowed at a swimming start or a gymnastics meet, and it can startle an athlete mid-skill.
- Step 2
Switch the grid on
On iPhone it’s in Settings, Camera, Grid. The lines help you keep your kid near the middle and the horizon level from the stands.
- Step 3
Lock the exposure on your kid
Bright water, white mats and sunny tracks fool the phone into darkening your kid. Tap them and hold until the lock appears. Lock again when the light changes.
- Step 4
Choose Full Quality when you add them
For the photos you might print or put on a team poster, pick Full Quality when you add them. A compressed photo looks fine on a phone and soft on paper.
Do this at home before you leave. At the event you won’t remember.
